A 16:10 or 3:2 display is therefore more useful than a high-refresh-rate gaming panel for most programmers.
Recommended:
- 14-inch 1920x1200 → Good.
- 14-inch 2560x1600 → Excellent.
- 13.5-inch 3:2 → Excellent for vertical code space.
- 16-inch 2560x1600 → Excellent for serious multitasking.
- 4K OLED → Beautiful, but not always the best battery-life choice.
THE PORT RULE
A developer's laptop should ideally have:
- USB-C.
- USB4 or Thunderbolt.
- USB-A.
- HDMI.
- Headphone jack.
- Ethernet if possible.
- SD card reader if you work with media.
You will eventually connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, phone, external SSD, development board, network cable or debugging hardware.
Having the correct port already built into the laptop is considerably nicer than carrying a small museum of dongles.
