For years, 1GbE Ethernet was perfectly respectable.
Then SSDs became absurdly fast, NAS systems with NVMe drives, and home networks began carrying enough data to make a gigabit connection feel rather small.
A modern PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD can move several gigabytes per second internally. A 1GbE network connection can theoretically move only about 125MB/s.
A 10GbE connection provides up to 10 gigabits per second of network bandwidth, or roughly 1.25GB/s before protocol overhead.
That is fast enough to make network storage feel much less like 'remote storage' and much more like an extension of the local computer.
This is particularly useful for:
- NAS servers.
- Proxmox clusters.
- Virtual machines.
- Large file transfers.
- Video editing.
- Workstation storage.
- Local AI datasets.
- High-speed backups.
- Network booting.
- Homelab environments.
But there is an important catch.
A 10GbE port is not automatically useful just because it is printed on the specification sheet.
Your switch, cables, storage system and client devices all need to support the required speeds.
Buying a 10GbE mini PC and connecting it to a 1GbE switch does not create a 10GbE network.

A SATA SSD can already saturate Gigabit Ethernet.
A fast NVMe SSD can leave Gigabit Ethernet looking completely overwhelmed.
SFP+ VS 10GBASE-T
Not all 10GbE ports are the same.
There are two major forms you will encounter on mini PCs.
SFP+
SFP+ uses a removable transceiver or direct-attach cable rather than a conventional RJ45 Ethernet connector.

For a conventional home or office network, 10GBASE-T can be easier to live with.
